YuJa Student Guide
What is YuJa?
YuJa is a technology that allows instructors to record a lecture or other content and make it available to students electronically. YuJa can also be streamed live. Students can watch YuJa videos in any browser or on a mobile device. Instructors can also allow students to use YuJa to record presentations or fulfill requirements for an assignment.
YuJa System Requirements
Note that your campus may have higher minimum requirements than this for using other technologies.
Minimum Requirements – desktop or laptop
- Processor: 2GHz x86- or x64- bit dual core processor (Recommended: 2.4 GHz, Quad Core)
- Memory (RAM): 2 GB RAM (Recommended: 4 GB)
- Hard Disk: 100MB for install (approximately 250MB per hour of content for temporary storage)
- Operating System: Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 (both 32 and 64 bit versions)
- Mac OS 10.10 or higher
- Internet Connection with 1.5 Mbps
Minimum Requirements - Mobile
- Android – Phones and tablets supporting Lollipop 5.0 and above
- iPhone – Phones and tablets supporting iOS 5 and above*
- When watching content on a mobile browser, users have a bandwidth connection of 4MB per minute for standard video quality
- When watching content on a mobile browser, users have a bandwidth connection of 10-12MB per minute for high definition video quality.
How to Access YuJa
YuJa is available in your Blackboard course, via a link on a website, or via a direct link that can be emailed to you. Chrome is the recommended browser.
Viewing Media within the Media Channels
If you access a link to YuJa through Blackboard, you will be presented with the YuJa dashboard. The media channels will be your primary means for viewing recordings. Media Channels are part of the Manage Media suite (shown below). For most students, this will be the default view when logging into the YuJa platform. Choose Manage Media from the top of the screen.
- Click on the desired Channel. These are accessible from the fully customizable horizontal selections in the middle of the screen.
- Select the video you want to watch. The video page will open, showing a preview of the video, tags, and In this Capture information.
- Press the Play button to open the HTML5 Media Player and watch the video.
Viewing Video Content from the Media Library
Captures and other media content can also be accessed through the Media Library.
- Choose Manage Media from the top of the screen.
- Navigate to the desired Channel or My Media.
- Choose the capture you want to watch.
- Click on the Play button to open the Media Player and watch the capture.
Using the Media Player
The HTML5 Media Player provides a full-featured viewing experience for captured or uploaded media. The Media Player offers the ability to watch videos, move forward and back in the video, turn on and off closed captioning, and take private notes.
- Open the video from the Media Channels or the Media Library.
- Click Play to watch the video. Use the Slider Bar to move forward and back in the video.
- Turn closed captioning on and off with the CC button and adjust various Settings if desired.
- Open the Sidebar to search, review the index, and access other features.
Watching Content on the Mobile App
The YuJa Mobile App enables users to watch captures and other media from a smartphone or tablet. The YuJa Mobile App is available for both Android and iOS.
- Open the YuJa Mobile App on your mobile device.
- Choose Media Channels.
- Select the desired video from the Mobile App and click Play.
Post a Discussion Question
Students can post discussion questions or comments to YuJa videos.
- Open a YuJa video to view it then click on the
main menu.
- Choose Discussion Feed.
Compose the Message
- Click in the Type a Message box to open a post window.
- Type your message or post.
- Optional: Select File to attach a file to your post. Select Sketch to create and attach a whiteboard-style sketch to your post. Video allows you to create and attach a web capture video.
- Click on Preview to see your post (from here you can cancel or post the message) or click Post to post to the desired group (shown to the left of these buttons).
Accessing Live Streams from Notifications
When the content owner begins a recording session, the notification light will flash in the upper right of your screen.
- Click on the Live icon in the upper right.
- Select the appropriate notification by clicking.
Accessing Live Streams from Your Email
The Platform will email you when a live stream begins.
- Click on the email entitled “You’ve been invited to a YuJa Live Stream.“
- Follow the link in the email or login to YuJa and access the Live Stream from your Notifications, as explained above.
Getting Started with Create Recording for Students
On your YuJa dashboard, clicking the Create Recording button the first time will The first time you click the Create Recording link, you’ll be prompted to download the YuJa Software Station capture application.
Click Download as shown below and follow all prompts to download.
In Chrome, when the software has finished downloading, this button appears in the lower left corner. Click it to install YuJa Software Station software (or go to your downloads folder and double-click the YuJa-Software-Station.exe file to launch the installation wizard.)
During the Install Shield Wizard, you will be prompted to accept the terms of agreement. Then, follow all prompts to install. After installation, you will be prompted to log into YuJa using single sign on:
And again, to validate your NDUS credentials:
Once you complete this sign-on process, you won’t have to repeat it unless you sign out.
Now you will be ready to record! In the future, when you click Create Recording, this is the dialog box that will appear.
About the YuJa Software Station

Title: Before you start recording, indicate the recording’s title or follow your instructor’s advice for a recording title.

Description: Indicate what your recording is about such as group member names, etc.

My Media Collection/Default Collection: Select where to record and where to publish.

Video Source: This displays the video currently feeding into the recording. See #6 for more information.

Screen: This displays the current screen being recorded.

Video: This button provides for alternative video options, or to turn video off completely.

Audio: This button provides for alternative audio input options.

Screen: This button provides for alternative content display options. For example, you can choose from single or duo displays, custom display, or capture a selected area.
Click Start to begin recording
Recording
Before you record, have your document, your PowerPoint slide show, or whatever you are choosing to record ready to display on your computer screen. Choose Start (see figure 3) to begin recording. A countdown from 3 will display and then you will be live.
When finished, look for YuJa’s Software Caption controls in the bottom right corner:
When you click stop, you’ll be prompted to save or delete the recording:
Allow the Recording to Process
Depending on the length or your recording, it may take a few minutes to process. DO NOT close your browser or disconnect from the Internet until the recording has fully rendered. You will receive an email confirmation when the recording is available.
Where to Find Recording
If you did not specify a folder or media channel in which to place the recording, you’ll find the recording in the My Media folder as shown in figure 1 of this handout. When you click My Media, you’ll see a folder called Default Collect which is the default location for all recordings. IMPORTANT: If you did not specify a course in step 3, your instructor cannot see your recording until you publish it to the course. Hover over the video thumbnail, choose Publish, and select a course.
