Valley City State University is proud to have a local SNDU chapter for it's future teaching professionals. Get involved and become a member of SNDU! The Student North Dakota United (SNDU) provides students with an opportunity to become members of a professional organization and have an active voice in the teaching profession.

The SNDU provides college students with assistance, benefits and professional resources. The association gives aspiring educators the opportunity to learn — not only from each other, but also from a network of campus advisors and from the finest professionals in education.

Student North Dakota United (SNDU) is the first opportunity pre-service students get to have an active voice in a professional organization. SNDU is designed and governed by student representatives from college campuses that offer careers in education within the state of North Dakota. Its purpose is to give prospective educators an understanding of the education profession, to allow students to have a voice in matters affecting the teaching profession, and to advance interests of students preparing for a career in education.

Each college campus has its own student chapter with a campus advisor, elects its own officers and manages its own program. The state SNDU affiliate holds a representative assembly in October to elect statewide officers and set the direction for the state program. Each campus selects two members to represent their interests at the state SNDU Board of Directors' meetings.

Current SNDU membership dues are $46.25.

Scholarships

$100 Scholarships

Each year one student from each active SNDU chapter is eligible to receive a $100 scholarship from the NDU. A check is presented to the chosen SNDU member at the Representative Assembly held in October.

$500 NDEA Foundation Scholarship

The NDU Foundation awards a $500 scholarship to an outstanding student who is preparing for a career in education. The winner is selected by the Board of Trustees of the Foundation. Application forms must be submitted by March 15 and include:

• A copy of the applicant's college transcript
• Three letters of recommendation; at least one coming from an educator
• An essay of 300-500 words on the applicant's goals, strengths and weaknesses.

To be eligible a student must be registered full time in a teacher education program, has maintained at least a 3.0 grade point average and maintains membership in the NEA student program.

$500 Minority Scholarship

To encourage and assist minorities to enter the profession of teaching, one $500 scholarship is awarded annually upon the recommendation of the NDEA's Minority Affairs Commission. The applicant must be a minority undergraduate student in good standing enrolled in a ND teacher education program. The dollar amount will be forwarded to the institution in which the recipient is enrolled to defer the usual expenses for the semester following the award. Applications must be postmarked by March 15 and include a college transcript, one letter of recommendation from a college professor and one personal letter outlining your goals, interests, need, and reasons for pursuing a career in teaching. Special Programs

SNDU offers conferences on interviewing processes, writing resumes, teacher portfolios, information and research on instructional issues, salaries, benefits, and working conditions within school districts.

First year teachers who belonged to the SNDU program are entitled to a $20 rebate from NDU and a $20 rebate from NEA for each year they were student members (up to 4 years).
