If a mac, typically running Catalina, is having the hard disk fill without reason, this could be due to both Bit Defender and Cortex XDR anti-virus running on at the same time.

To resolve:

  1. Open the Terminal App
  2. at the prompt run (hit enter at the end of each command):

cd /private/var/tmp
ls
sudo rm -rf tmp00*

the "sudo" command will require the users Mac password. NOTE: this command can take some time to finish, in some cases over night.

EXAMPLE:

3. Remove Bitdefender manually:

/MacHD/Library/Bitdefender/AVP/uninstaller/

Run the uninstaller - this will prompt for password a few times.

4. Reboot and make sure Bitdefender is gone, Cortex is running fine and there is plenty of disk space.

5. Update to the most current version of macOS Big Sur.
