How to erase and get your Macbook ready for turn-in
Before erasing your computer, make sure to back up any data you want from it. This can be done via Onedrive, USB drive, or another cloud solution.
NOTE: THE FOLLOWING WILL ERASE EVERYTHING FROM YOUR COMPUTER. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RECOVER DATA FROM THE COMPUTER ITSELF. MAKE SURE TO BACK UP EVERYTHING YOU NEED OFF OF IT FIRST.
1. At the desktop, click on the Apple in the upper left hand corner of the screen.
2. You will either have "System Preferences" or "System Settings". Follow the below based on which menu item you have:
If you have System Settings:
- At this new menu, click on "General" in the left hand menu of the window. If you are on General, click out of it and back onto it to make sure you are at the main menu of "General"
- On the right hand side, near the bottom after scrolling, click on "Transfer or Reset"
- Click on "Erase All Content and Settings..."
- You will be asked to put in your computer password. Do so now.
- You will see a screen that will tell you what you are signed in on. Click "Next"
- (If you are signed into Apple ID) You will be asked to sign out of your Apple ID account. Put in your Apple ID password at the popup here. If it was correct, the computer will do nothing for about 1 minute.
- (If you signed out of Apple ID) An Apple ID window might reappear to sign back into Apple ID. Close this window
- You will get a message about erasing your computer. The first option will have red letters. Once you click on the button with red letters, your computer will erase and restart. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE EVERYTHING BACKED UP BEFORE THIS PART. When you are ready, click on the button with red letters.
